Two National Public Reviews to be Considered in Future BC Building Codes

What?

The Government of Canada is conducting two national public reviews:

  1. The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Code Public Review
  2. The Accessibility Standards Canada Public Review

National Public Review

Why do we need your input?

While these are national reviews, we encourage our local partners in British Columbia to respond, as the changes will be considered for adoption in future BC Building Codes.

BC’s Building Codes are ultimately based on the National Model, and the Province will also be looking to advance accessibility standards into the BC Building Code. It is important to provide feedback now to ensure our Province’s input is reflected early in the process.

The Public Reviews:

  1. Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Code public review

TypesOfCodes

The proposed changes to the 2020 National Model Codes of Canada (Building Code; Fire Code; Plumbing Code; and Energy Code) include, for example:

  • Gendered Washroom requirements
  • Vent pipe outlets for storage tanks
  • Part-load performance of boilers and furnaces
  • Relief valves on hot water tanks

Your feedback on the proposed changes will help shape the National Model Codes which the BC Codes are based on.

  1. For a quick summary of the proposed changes, please visit the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes Website and scroll down to “Summary of Proposed Changes.”
  2. Please visit the website for more information on the full list of changes and for details how to provide feedback.

You can also provide any general feedback or comments to our Government Relations Director, Zach Segal at zsegal@boma.bc.ca

The public review runs until December 23, 2022.

If you have technical questions about the review please email CCBFCSecretary-SecretaireCCCBPI@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca.

2. Accessibility Standards Canada public review

Accessibility

The Province is also working with standards development organizations to advance accessibility in the BC Building Code. The standard aims to remove and prevent the barriers in the built environment for all Canadians. These standards will be shared for reference in whole, or in part, in the British Columbia Building Code.

  1. For a quick summary of the proposed changes, please visit A Model Standard for the Built Environment – Accessibility Executive Summary.
  2. More information on how to participate in the review can be found on the Accessibility Standards Canada website.

You can also provide any general feedback or comments to our Government Relations Director, Zach Segal at zsegal@boma.bc.ca

The deadline for feedback is January 7th, 2023.
