Metro Vancouver plans to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Large Buildings.

Metro Vancouver is in the early stages of developing two approaches to improve air quality in the Metro Vancouver region.

Metro Vancouver’s jurisdiction includes 21 municipalities in the lower mainland, from as far west as Bowen Island to Langley. (On May 17th, 2022, the City of Vancouver implemented its GHG emission limits.)

The proposed approach to managing GHG emissions would require building owners to report the GHG emissions from their buildings yearly to ensure that emissions fall below set limits.

Additionally, new or replacement boilers and process heaters would need to be ultra-low Nitrogen Dioxide; building owners may also be required to conduct testing and modelling to prove their compliance.

While this is only the first consultation phase, feedback on the initial proposals will be accepted until November 30th, 2022. You can submit feedback through the following links:

  2. Metro Vancouver: Proposed Amendments to Boilers and Process Heaters Emission Regulation (civilspace.io)

BOMA BC plans to conduct focus groups and education sessions with our members to gauge their preparedness for these potential regulatory changes and their impact.
